This book is the classic travel narrative of the renowned Russian explorer P. K. Kozlov (П. К. Козлов), describing his Central Asian expedition of 1907-1909. It provides a detailed account of a long journey that began in northern Mongolia, crossed the Gobi Desert, explored the lower reaches of the Ejin River, and investigated the ruins of the ancient city of Khara-Khoto, before continuing through the Alxa region, the Nanshan Mountains of Gansu, Qinghai Lake, the Amdo Plateau, and other areas. Written in the first person, the book vividly records the landscapes and landforms encountered along the route, climatic characteristics, the distribution of vegetation and wildlife, the customs and traditions of various peoples including Mongols, Tibetans, and Tanguts, as well as religious activities such as visits to Lamaist monasteries and meetings with the Dalai Lama. Particular attention is devoted to one of the expedition's most significant archaeological achievements: the excavation of the ancient city of Khara-Khoto, identified with the ruins of the Western Xia city of Heishui. The volume also includes a special scholarly essay discussing the academic significance of Kozlov's archaeological discoveries and presents readers with a rich portrayal of the natural and social conditions of the Central Asian interior at the beginning of the twentieth century.
