%X Freeman's Natural, Historical, Social and Economic Geography of Ireland was published in London in 1950. The author's long teaching of geography at Dublin University has enabled him to gather a wealth of practical material on physical geography and various sectors of the national economy, and to make the narrative more vivid with personal impressions. Freeman also made extensive use of statistics and consulted the work of many economists and geographers.It is precisely because of the wealth of factual material gathered that Freeman's work can be a useful reference manual, especially its second part, which contains a detailed divisional description of Ireland.The book contains several interesting chapters describing the characteristics of Ireland's agricultural system, weak industrial development, overall economic backwardness, and the country's dependence on imperialist powers. The stark facts collected by Freeman reflect the backwardness of Irish agriculture, the primitive nature of its technology, the existence of a patriarchal natural economic form, and the extreme poverty of most Irish farmers.
