%X This book opens the publication of a ten-volume series "Soviet Nature Reserves". The 13 nature reserves in the Far East reflect the typical natural characteristics of this vast area that stretches for 5000 kilometers along the Pacific coast. To the north, in the Chukchi Sea lies the austere Wrangel Island, home to the Arctic tundra, polar bears, snow goose colonies and the largest walrus habitat. In the south, there is a mixed forest of rattan coniferous and broad-leaved vines in the Wusuli Border Region, where sables and wolverines coexist with tigers and leopards. Kamchatka and the Kuril Islands are home to salmon rivers, giant brown bears, magnificent volcanoes and geysers. For the first time, this book describes in detail the nature, fauna and vegetation of all protected areas, and discusses the current status and prospects of nature conservation in the Far East.This volume is published simultaneously in five languages: Russian, English, Spanish, German and French (see the copyright page and spine for the title of the book), and is open to readers at home and abroad.
