AB  - The eighth volume of the encyclopedia Medicinal Plants of Turkmenistan is my gift to the Turkmen people and is dedicated to the “Year of Honoring Heritage and Reforming the Motherland.” It represents a continuation of research into the rich legacy of our ancestors, a heritage formed by the numerous works of outstanding ancient scholars and physicians, as well as by the collective experience accumulated through the unique talents and skills of our people in exploring and understanding the generosity of their native land.Our land and natural environment are sources of energy, health, and longevity. The ancient science devoted to understanding the mysteries of water, land, air, and medicinal herbs was created by our ancestors. For them, knowledge of the useful properties of the environment was not merely a blessing but, at times, the only means of survival. From that time onward, the history of medicine began, and it can be said with confidence that the world's earliest physicians were those whom we would today call practitioners of phytotherapy.“Medicine is the art of imitating nature's healing action,” wrote the renowned ancient physician Hippocrates. The outstanding Eastern scholar Abu Ali Ibn Sina, known in Europe as Avicenna, also promoted this idea and made remarkable contributions to the history of medicine. He authored forty medical treatises. For centuries, Ibn Sina's Canon of Medicine served as an indispensable reference not only for physicians of the East but also for those of Europe, exerting a profound influence on the development of world medicine. In this work, Ibn Sina described approximately 800 medicinal substances and methods for their preservation.Among the sources relating to the history of medicinal-plant research, we take particular pride in the information concerning medicinal plants growing in present-day Turkmenistan found in the classical works of distinguished physicians and scholars who once lived on Turkmen soil, including Abu Ali Ibn Sina
