本教材根据苏联高等和中等专业教育部为地质勘探中等专业学校批准的、以下专业（1. 地球物理矿产勘探方法；2. 井中地球物理研究方法；3. 矿产勘探技术）的教学大纲，阐述了普通地质学、历史地质学和苏联地质学的基本概念。\n本书第二版经过大幅修订和补充。更新了构造图和古地理图以及部分插图，书名亦作变更（第一版书名为《普通地质学与历史地质学》）。在教材的第一部分（普通地质学）中，增加了自然保护和人与环境相互作用的问题，并新设“人类的地质活动”一章。第二部分（历史地质学和苏联地质学基础）中，新增了两章：“地壳和有机界发展的基本规律”和“苏联领土地质构造和矿产的总体特征”。\n作者对М.
