保护自然免遭人类经济活动日益增长的影响这一问题具有全面、全球性的意义。工业生产集中化速度的加快及其伴随的城市化、农业生产集约化的加强以及各种农药生产和使用的相应增加、为了科技进步的需要而日益扩大的各种新化学化合物的合成——所有这些及其他过程都导致对人类健康有害的物质污染土壤、水和大气。关于污染物的信息非常广泛，但分散在各种专业、部门和行业出版物中，未经系统整理，通常零散且难以获取。\n出版一种能够为从事环境保护问题的广大实践和科研工作者提供必要定向信息的书目性出版物，已成为迫切需要。\n苏联科学院图书馆正着手准备和出版这样一部工具书。本目录索引是第一部，今后计划每年至少出版一次。\n索引收录关于人为来源的、污染土壤、水和大气物质的文献，关于其毒性、危害、进入环境的来源及在环境中的含量、物理化学和卫生学特征、指示、最大容许浓度、在生物圈中的迁移和转化途径、对生物体和生态系统影响的文献。\n材料按专门为本工具书编制的方案系统化，各部分内部按字母顺序排列。\n第一部分收录关于环境污染一般问题的文献。第二部分收录关于无机污染物的材料，按门捷列夫周期表排列，结尾为“重金属”部分，汇集了关于这些金属的总体文献。第三部分收录关于有机污染物的出版物。个别农药的材料归入相应有机物的部分；农药总体上划入专门部分。其他复杂有机化合物也反映在专门部分（“萜烯及其衍生物”、“有机染料”等）。索引以“石油及其加工产品”部分收尾。\n在文献选取过程中，使用了苏联科学院图书馆、萨尔蒂科夫-谢德林国立公共图书馆的目录和馆藏。为保证选材完整，查阅了《自然保护与自然资源再生产》和《毒理学》文摘杂志，以及全俄科学技术信息研究所和全苏列宁农业科学院中央农业科学图书馆收到的外文期刊目录副本。\n大部分文献已查阅原件。那些信息取自全俄科学技术信息研究所文摘杂志的出版物标有星号（*）。无法通过参考工具书核实的书目信息，则注明相应文摘杂志的摘要编号，并标有两个星号（**）。书目描述按照ГОСТ 7.1—76、7.12—77、7.11—78及方法指导性说明编制。外文期刊名称缩写按全俄科学技术信息研究所文摘杂志采用的缩写规则给出。\n索引辅助工具包括人名索引、本辑收录的有机物名称列表以及连续出版物的缩写和全称列表。后者不包括其缩写名称取自全俄科学技术信息研究所文摘杂志书目描述的连续出版物。\n索引面向与化学物质环境污染及环境保护问题有或多或少联系的广大实践和科研人员。它对所有生产企业（首先是化工和加工行业）、专业教研室和研究所、卫生防疫站和各种检查机构等监督组织、以及从事土壤、水和大气污染及其防治基础问题的学者都有用。\n
